AUSSIE BONDS: Slightly Weaker On A Data-Light Day, AOFM Issuance Update Out

ACGBs (YM -1.0 & XM -2.5) are moderately weaker on a data-light day.

  • Cash US tsys are 1-2bps cheaper, with a flattening bias, in today's Asia-Pac session after yesterday's gains.
  • Cash ACGBs are 1-2bps cheaper with the AU-US 10-year yield differential at -12bp.
  • The bills strip is slightly mixed, with pricing -1 to +1.
  • RBA-dated OIS pricing is little changed across meetings today. A 25bp rate cut in July is given a 94% probability, with a cumulative 82bps of easing priced by year-end.
  • During the first half of 2025-26, the Australian Office of Financial Management (AOFM) plans to: issue a new October 2036 Treasury Bond (by syndication and subject to market conditions); conduct 2 Treasury Bond tenders most weeks; hold 1-2 Treasury Indexed Bond tenders each month. Note that tenders will be held on Thursdays; conduct a Treasury Note tender most weeks and maintain at least $25 billion on issue. 
  • Issuance of Treasury Bonds (including Green Treasury Bonds) in 2025-26 is expected to be around $150 billion. Issuance of Treasury Indexed Bonds in 2025-26 is expected to be between $2 billion and $3 billion.

NZD: - Slightly Bid After RBNZ

The RBNZ CUTS BENCHMARK INTEREST RATE BY 25BPS TO 3.25%; EST. 3.25%.

  • NZDUSD - traded heavy into the announcement going into it around 0.5930, a pretty muted reaction with the NZD/USD bouncing slightly towards 0.5940 now.
  • AUD/NZD - got up to a high around 1.0851 just before the RBNZ, but has subsequently drifted back to the 1.0820 area.
  • NZD/JPY - printed around 85.48 going into the announcement, but has bounced back post the announcement to be trading around 85.70.

RBNZ: RBNZ Cuts Rates 25bp, Decision Not Unanimous

The RBNZ cut rates 25bp to 3.25% as was widely expected but the vote was split 5 to 1. The vote was between the cut and staying on hold. It published updated staff forecasts which include a downward of the OCR low to 2.9% from 3.1% in February. See statement here. A press conference with new Governor Hawkesby will be held at 1500 NZST/1300 AEST. More details to follow.
