"Rio Tinto Says Australia’s Tomago Aluminum Smelter May Close " - BBG
Rio may close Tomago smelter, likely requires government support on energy, neutral.
Rio may close Tomago Aluminium smelter, the largest aluminium smelter in Australia (40% of total), producing around 590,000 tonnes of aluminium a year. The issue has been well flagged, neutral for spreads.
The key issue is energy costs, which represent around 40% of operating costs, as current energy contracts are set to expire in 2028. The operation is reported to consume 10% of NSW total energy supply. New energy proposals make the smelter unviable, with operations set to close. Tomago Aluminium is a JV owned by Rio Tinto (52%), Gove Aluminium Finance Ltd (36%), and Norsk Hydro (12%).
