G20: German Gov't Official-No Guarantee Communique Coming From Leaders' Summit

Nov-20 14:20

With the G20 leaders' summit set to get underway on Saturday, 21 November, Reuters reports comments from a German gov't official stating that it is "open whether there will be a final communique" from the summit. Says that the govt' does "not expect concrete agreements at the G20, especially on Ukraine".

  • For next year, the official says people should "expect fewer participants, [and a] narrower focus on financial and economic topics" as the US assumes the G20 chair in 2026.
  • Expectations for the upcoming summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, are as low as they have ever been for a meeting of the G20, an increasingly uneasy grouping that includes nations of the G7 (viewed as US-aligned) and the BRICS (viewed as more China-aligned).
  • US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Argentinian President Javier Milei are all due to skip the event, with the US sending no delegation whatsoever.
