EGBS: SPGB/OAT/PGB Fly Hits All-Time Low On Increased French Risk

Oct-07 12:38

The 10-Year SPGB/OAT/PGB butterfly has stabilised around -76bp after Monday’s political developments in France triggered the latest round of OAT weakness vs. both Iberian & broader EGB peers.

  • Today’s stabilisation comes as the OAT/Bund spread fails to break above year-to-date closing highs (86.3bp) on a sustained basis, with several desks suggesting that a definitive break beyond that level will likely require further French political deterioration
  • Zooming out, the 10-Year SPGB/OAT/PGB fly trades at the lowest level seen within the BBG data series (going back to ’97), reflecting not only the French political, fiscal and related sovereign credit rating risks, but also the positive fiscal and sovereign rating trajectories evident in the Iberian nations.
  • A reminder that the structure was trading around +50bp at the end of ’23, and finished ’24 around -50bp, as French political and fiscal risks deepened

  • President Donald Trump will greet Canadian PM Mark Carney at 11:30 ET 16:30 BST. The meeting is unlikely to yield any breakthroughs on trade or tariff relief.
  • Fed governor Stephen Miran will speak at two conferences today. Trump will host his eighth Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent skirted the Senate by tapping Frank Bisignano as 'CEO' of the IRS.
  • Day Seven of the US government shutdown. There is no sign of a resolution, although Trump cracked the door open to negotiations over Obamacare subsidies. Senate Democrats blocked the GOP’s funding bill yesterday evening, for the fifth time. If Majority Leader Thune (R-SD) runs the vote again today, the same result is expected.
  • Furloughed federal workers may not be guaranteed shutdown backpay. NEC Director Kevin Hassett said the shutdown will show up in the GDP number.
  • Trump previewed a new 25% tariff on trucks. A call with his Brazilian counterpart suggests Trump may be looking to de-escalate trade tensions with Brasilia.
  • National Guard troops could arrive in Chicago as soon as today.
  • Israel and Hamas continue indirect ceasefire talks in Egypt.
  • Trump called off diplomacy with Venezuela, signalling potential military escalation.
  • Trump will meet Finnish President Alexander Stubb on Thursday. Stubb said last week it is only a matter of time before Trump takes action to penalise Russia. Trump edges closer to approving long-range missiles to Kyiv.
  • Poll of the Day: Support for US military aid to Ukraine increases.
