President Donald Trump said the United States can strike the outline of a trade deal with Canada during his meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney Monday at a G7 summit, though it's unclear if that will reflect his desire for tariffs or another solution he said Carney is backing.
“Our primary focus will be trade and trade with Canada, and I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out,” Trump said in brief remarks at an appearance with Carney before their meeting. “We’ll see if we can get to the bottom of it today,” Trump said, adding “I have a tariff concept, Mark has a different concept… Mark has a more complex idea but I also think very good.”
Asked if something final can emerge in days or weeks Trump agreed, after earlier saying Canadian and U.S. negotiators have a good working relationship. (See: MNI: Carney To Take On Trump, Be Fiscally Cautious - Ministers)
