Canadian provincial leaders voiced support Wednesday for retaliation if President Donald Trump imposes 35% tariffs, evidence they agree with Prime Minister Mark Carney's view that chances for a deal by Trump's Aug. 1 deadline are slipping away.

“I’m fully supportive of retaliation against the Americans where that has a very low or no impact on Canadians,” David Eby of British Columbia told reporters at a federal-provincial meeting. “This (Trump) administration is already flailing a fair bit. Their economy is slowing, inflation is going up, it will collapse under its own weight, we just need to give it some time."

Ontario's Doug Ford said he supports matching a recent 50% U.S. steel and aluminum tariff if there's no deal soon, if only to prevent China dumping steel. He also accepted the possibility a deal being pushed back to next year when a regular review of USMCA is scheduled, saying “I have no problem, but I don’t trust President Trump farther than I can throw him.” (See: MNI: Canada Pushed Bessent On Market Drop After Auto Tariff)
