Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday he wants to expand trade with China after years of diplomatic tensions and that a long phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump Monday night produced no breakthrough to ease tariffs on autos and steel.

Carney wants to settle recent Chinese restrictions on Canadian canola and seafood exports, imposed after his government mirrored U.S. tariffs on Chinese steel, and to look for deeper future ties. “There may be areas that while respecting and protecting Canadian sovereignty, Canadian security, we can expand the commercial relationship with things that China does well,” he told reporters before a cabinet retreat in Toronto.
