Mark Carney stressed ahead of Monday's election that he will assert Canada's economic power in trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, who the former Bank of England and Bank of Canada Governor said is pushing the U.S. into a Brexit-style economic setback.

“When you break off or substantially rupture trading relationships… you end up with slower growth, higher inflation, higher interest rates, volatility, weaker currency, a weaker economy. And we’re in the early stages of that in the U.S.,” Carney said at a weekend campaign rally north of Toronto.

“We show the Americans that we’re not waiting for the phone to ring, we have other work to do. And when they are ready to have a serious discussion, we’ll have a serious discussion,” Carney said. The tougher stance on Trump has helped more than erase what was a double-digit deficit to Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives. (See: MNI: Carney To Take On Trump, Be Fiscally Cautious - Ministers)
