Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday Canada will drop tariffs on U.S. imports that comply with the earlier USMCA trade pact, matching President Donald Trump's stance in an effort to agree upon a wider deal.
Tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos will remain in place, Carney said at a press conference. (See: MNI: Canada Pushed Bessent On Market Drop After Auto Tariff)
While the U.S. stance on trade has shifted to broad tariffs with many other nations, "Canada currently has the best trade deal with the United States. While it is different from what we had before, it is still better than that of any country" Carney said.
