ENERGY: Energy from Overseas, Incl Sakhalin, Important for Japan: Ministry

Nov-28 08:35

Securing energy from overseas, including from the Sakhalin Project, is extremely important for Japan's energy security, Japan's industry ministry said cited by Reuters.

  • The US sanctions which came into effect on Nov. 21 included Rosneft, a key shareholder in the Sakhalin-1 project.
  • "We will take necessary measures to ensure that Japan's stable energy supply is not compromised," the statement added.
  • The ministry declined to comment specifically on the impact of sanctions impact on the project.
  • Japanese government officials have repeatedly stated Japan would find it difficult to quit Russian energy but last month the economy minister said Japan had been “steadily reducing its dependence on Russian energy.”
