EdF said on Thursday that the construction of the six new EPR2 nuclear reactors will cost up to €72.8bn, well above previous estimates, Le Figaro reported.
- The cost for the new French reactors was last estimated at €67.4bn.
- The estimated cost for construction, excluding financing costs, has increased to almost €80bn when accounting for inflation, the Court of Auditors previously said.
- The firm was due to present a credible budget for its plan to build six new EPR2 nuclear plants by the end of this year.
- EDF plans to reduce expenses by constructing its reactors as a standardized series, a strategy expected to cut costs by roughly 30% by the completion of the final unit, according to Xavier Gruz, the executive director overseeing new projects, speaking to reporters during a briefing.
- Earlier this month, EdF sent a request for approval to the EU Commission for a state aid package to cover costs for the firm’s EPR2 programme including the construction of six nuclear reactors.
