CANADA DATA: Canada Jobs in June +83.1K Above Consensus For Flat Reading

  • Canada employment in June +83.1K, sharply above economists' flat forecast and predictions by some that the economy is entering a recession.
  • Despite the ongoing U.S. trade war, the increase was broad-based and led by wholesale and trade, healthcare and even manufacturing. 
  • Unemployment fell for the first time since January, +6.9% in June, below consensus for a +7.1% increase and down from +7.0% in May.
  • Hours worked +0.5% MOM and +1.6% YOY. 
  • Average hourly wages among employees +3.2% YOY in June from +3.4% in May. 
  • Unemployment rate in auto hub of Windsor, rose to 11.2% in June. 
  • Returning students saw the highest jobless rate for the month of June since 2009 ex-pandemic. 
  • BOC has said it could cut interest rates if the economy weakens and inflation is contained. The next interest rate decision is July 30.
