CANADA DATA: Biggest Foreign Canada Securities Buy Since Mar 2022 Led By Bonds

  • Foreign investors bought CAD46.6B of Canada securities in Oct, led by CAD34.0B of debt and CAD12.6 billion of equities, StatsCan said Wed.
  • "Since July, the investment activity has rebounded significantly as non-resident investors purchased $126.9 billion worth of Canadian securities, mostly in the form of bonds. This was in contrast with the general divestment pattern observed in the first half of the year, a period during which foreign investors reduced their holdings of Canadian securities by $22.4 billion."
  • Foreigners pared holdings of bills while buying CAD17.8B of corporate bonds largely sold in USD, and Canada bonds worth CAD16.2B.
  • YTD foreign purchases are now CAD105B vs prior CAD165B.

Monday 17 November:

  • Ukraine-France: French President Emmanuel Macron is hosting his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in Paris. During their meeting at Villacoublay air base near Paris, the two signed a letter of intent for Ukraine to purchase up to 100 Rafale fighter jets, as well as other French-made military equipment, in its efforts to repel Russia’s invasion. The purchases are due to be realised over a period of around 10 years, although questions remain on the ability of Kyiv to fund these purchases, having signed a separate letter of intent to purchase 100-150 Gripen jets from Sweden.
