US: USTR Nominee Greer To Deliver Testimony To Senate Finance Committee Shortly

Feb-06 15:01

US President Donald Trump's nominee to serve as United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, is shortly due to appear before the Senate Finance Committee for his first nomination hearing. LIVESTREAM

  • Per his prepared remarks, Greer will say that "America should be a country of producers. We are more than just what we consume," arguing that trade policy should be considered an integral part of US national security policy.
  • Greer will say the US, "will have little in the way of hard power to deter conflict," without bolstering manufacturing, adding that, "trade policy can play an important role in ensuring that we have the economic security that leads to strong national security."
  • Greer worked under former USTR Robert Lighthizer in Trump’s first administration, helping negotiate the never-implemented ‘Phase One’ trade deal with China. However, there are questions over the mandate of the USTR in the second Trump administration, with Trump appearing likely to defer trade policy to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
  • The Telegraph noted in November that Greer included Britain in a list of countries that the US should partner with instead of China, hinting that he could steer a more pragmatic trade policy.

US: Trump Speak To Press @1100ET

Jan-07 15:00

President-elect Donald Trump will hold a press conference from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida at 1100ET (1600GMT/1700CET).  This will be Trump's second press conference since his election victory in November, and his first comments to the press since the certification of his election victory in the joint session of Congress held on 6 January.

  • NYT reports "The ostensible topic is expected to relate to an economic development announcement. But Mr. Trump is likely to take questions, and if history is a guide, he will do so on a range of issues. Mr. Trump has laid out an ambitious agenda for his first few months, attempting sweeping legislation that would encompass border security and an extension of the tax cuts he signed into law in his first term. But he is facing a Congress in which Republicans have the narrowest of majorities and little room for error."
