CNH: USD/CNH Supported Sub 7.1700 As Market Digests Xi/Trump Call

Jun-05 22:58

USD/CNH tracks near 7.1750 in early Friday dealings. Intra-session lows from Thursday were at 7.1645, as headlines crossed of the Trump-Xi phone call. CNH was little changed in aggregate for Thursday's session. Spot USD/CNY finished up at 7.1777, while the CNY CFETS basket tracker lost 0.16% to finish at 95.75 (per BBG). This is quite close to lows in the index from April.

  • Positive headlines emanated from both sides after the phone call, with new rounds of trade talks agreed to by both sides. Both leaders were also invited to China and the US. US negotiations will be lead by Bessent, Lutnick and Greer, per a Trump Truth Social post.
  • Elsewhere US Commerce Secretary called for greater enforcement of US export controls against China (per BBG). This underscores that any talks could still take some time to deliver a meaningful agreement or lowering in tariffs/tensions.
  • The US growth outlook would likely be upgraded, all else equal, under lower tariff levels, which would aid the USD against safe havens. Crosses like CNH/JPY would also rise. We were last near 20.00 for this pair, so still within recent ranges.
  • The US Tsy released its semi annual FX report. China remains on the monitoring list for its lack of transparency around its exchange rate policies and practices, as well as its outside trade imbalance with the United States, the officials said. No country met the criteria to be named an FX manipulator.
