The Washington Post reporting that US President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang today, the first known meeting between the pair.
- The meeting comes amid the fallout Chinese artificial intelligence app DeepSeek, which raised questions about large government-led investments in AI and the efficacy of export controls on China, designed to maintain US superiority in AI.
- The Post notes: "Planning for the meeting began before the spike in anxiety about DeepSeek, according to a senior administration official and a person familiar with the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private plans. The meeting is expected to be an introduction and a broad conversation about AI policy, the person added."
- Trump's Commerce Secretary nominee, Howard Lutnick, described the Biden-era CHIPS and Science Act as an ‘excellent down payment’ to a Senate committee this week but declined to commit to honouring disbursement of the funds.
- Notably, Lutnick took a hawkish line on China, promising that, under his leadership, the Bureau of Industry and Security would take a harder line on Chinese firms "using our tools to compete with us".
- Lutnich: “I’m thrilled to oversee BIS and I’m thrilled to coordinate and empower BIS with tariffs that will improve the strength when we say no, the answer’s got to be no."
- Yesterday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman delivered a private demo of AI tech to Trump administration officials and policymakers to demonstrate the benefits of AI.
