POWER: Swedish Gov Proposes SEK220bln Investment for Nuclear Expansion
Sweden’s government is seeking permission from the Parliament to borrow up to SEK220bln Swedish Crowns (€19.93bln) for the construction of new nuclear power plants, Financial Markets Minister Niklas Wykman said on Friday as part of the 2026 budget bill.
- The 2026 budget bill proposes financial frameworks for the government to negotiate with companies applying for support with agreements to be signed in 2026 and 2027.
- The frameworks are based on an expected lending of SEK220bln over 12 years and expected future annual expenses for price hedging of an average of SEK 1–3bln/yr for 40 years after the reactors once operational.
- Sweden plans to install nuclear power plants or SMRs with a total capacity of 5GW, with half of the capacity scheduled to be online by 2035, according to a bill passed by the Swedish Parliament in May.
- The government to handle applications for around half of the total support in 2026.
- The 2026 budget bill also proposed SEK161mln for the permit review of nuclear plants.

Q: Why haven’t you cut rates today?
A: If we were completely focuses on inflation, we may have had to consider a hike. But we are not. We also take the economic situation into account, which remains weak. We continue to think inflation is on its way down to 2%.
- Future rate decisions will depend on the data. The June rate path assumed a ~50% probability of another cut. I don’t want to point to specific meetings.

Thedeen on the economic outlook: Positive real wages should start to support consumption going forward, but we think high uncertainty has caused households to save, rather than consume, so far this year.
