POWER: Statnett: NO2 Hydropower Upgrades Could Add 5GW, Boost Flows

Statnett’s new analysis shows that hydropower upgrades in Norway’s NO2 region could add up to 5GW of capacity by 2035, according to the TSO.
- The move could “smooth” electricity prices, increasing flexibility, and boosting north-south power flows with minimal new grid infrastructure.
- This comes as several major hydro plants in NO2 are set for upgrades, increasing generation and pumping capacity.
- Additionally, increased production and pumping in Southern Norway will enable more hours of full export and import, decreasing price synchronisation with foreign markets and boosting bottleneck revenues.
- The 1.4GW North Sea link between the UK and Norway is in the NO2 bidding zone.
