“El Salvador Feb. Overseas Remittances Rise 15.49% Y/y” - BBG
Supportive for bond prices
• Overseas remittances rose to $729.28m from $677.13m in January according to the central bank of El Salvador as reported by Bloomberg.
• Remittances accounted for 24% of El Salvador GDP in 2023 according to the World Bank so a meaningful contributor to the country’s economy. In 2021 90% of those remittances came from the US according to Statista and the USDA noted that in 2022 94% of remittances came from the US.
• Will a change in immigration flows affect remittances? So far, with a 15% increase in February 2025 year over year the answer seems to be no.
• ELSALV 2054 price fell from USD106 three months ago to last quoted USD104.33 after hitting a peak of USD108 in early February 2025.
• El Salvador’s continued accumulation of Bitcoin is the main issue for the USD bonds with the IMF explicitly stating its expectation that the country will eventually divest its holdings.
