PERU: Record Seizure In Fight Against Illegal Gold Mining
Jul-25 12:04
Peruvian customs officials seized around four metric tons of mercury shipped from Mexico last month in their battle against illegal gold mining, according to a report on Bloomberg. The Environmental Investigation Agency said that this was the biggest ever such seizure of the metal in Peru, which is used in the refining process of gold.
The EIA said that there has been a jump in illegal gold mining in the region, amid record high gold prices. It said that 200 tons of mercury was trafficked between April 2019 and June 2025, resulting in the production of at least $8bn in illegal gold.
Separately, the local calendar remains light today, with the next tier-one data release being July CPI inflation on August 1. Analysts expect the headline rate to remain broadly unchanged again, around 1.65% y/y, keeping it in the lower half of the 1-3% target range. The next BCRP MPC meeting is on August 14.
