RUSSIA: Putin Meets Modi in India to Underscore Defense and Energy Ties

Dec-04 08:29
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin begins a 2-day visit to India where he will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to underscore defense and energy ties between the two countries. Bloomberg reported this morning that India will pay about $2bn to lease a nuclear-powered submarine from Russia. Meanwhile, the Russia-India Business Forum starts in New Delhi.
  • Russia hasn’t agreed with some points of the US peace proposals, but this is a complicated process, Putin said in an interview with India today. Putin described the meeting with US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner as 'very useful'.
  • Russia's federal budget will see a shortfall in oil and gas revenues totalling RUB 137.6bn in December after taking in RUB 14.1bn more than expected in November, the Finance Ministry said. The difference of RUB 123.4bn will, in line with the fiscal rule, be covered with sales of foreign currency from the National Welfare Fund that will amount to the equivalent of RUB 5.6bn per day from December 5 to January 15, the highest figure in almost two years. This could give the already strong RUB an extra boost, Vedomosti note.
  • The Russian economy will need about 12.2 million new workers by 2032, including 11.7 million to replace retiring workers, the Labor Ministry said in its first seven-year forecast for Russia's labour needs. This means 1.7 million new people will need to enter the labour market annually.

Reeves: "As I take my decisions on both tax and spend, I will do what is necessary to protect families from high inflation and interest rates, to protect our public services from a return to austerity, and to ensure that the economy that we hand down to future generations is secure, the debt under control."
