RUSSIA: Putin Announces Nuclear Torpedo Test After Trump Lambasts Missile Launch

Oct-29 12:08

President Vladimir Putin is speaking on a number of military and security issues at a meeting of gov't ministers. Regarding the test of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik ['Storm Petrel'] missile, which US President Donald Trump referred to as 'not acceptable', Putin says the nuclear reactor installed within the subsonic cruise missile can be launched "within minutes and seconds." While the range of the missile (it flew 8,700 miles in 15 hours according to the Russian military) means it could feasibly deliver a nuclear warhead to the other side of the planet, WSJ notes that the increased defensive technologies of Russia's adversaries mean hypersonic missiles represent the greater threat.

  • Putin also claims that Russia tested the nuclear-powered, nuclear-capable unmanned underwater 'Poseidon' vehicle on 28 October. Ostensibly a massive nuclear torpedo, the Poseidon is designed to be able to travel extremely long distances before detonating underwater, causing a massive radioactive tsunami that could destroy coastal cities.
  • The tests have already irked the US, with Trump telling reporters aboard Air Force One earlier in the week, “We have a nuclear submarine, the greatest in the world, right off their shores, [our missile] doesn’t have to go 8,000 miles...We test missiles all the time...They're not playing games with us, and we're not playing games with them either."
