POWER: Poland's June Diverges from EU ETS, EU Coal Losses

 Poland’s June climbed slightly as average temperatures in Warsaw were revised lower on the day and are expected to be below seasonal throughout most of June. However, losses in European coal and EU ETS capped gains. Spot prices are likely to drop on 16 May with wind climbing to a 36% load factor, or 3.31GW.

  • Poland’s June baseload power settled at PLN411.83/MWh compared to its settled price of PLN409.60/MWh on 13 May, according to data on Polish power exchange TGE.
  • EUA DEC 25 down 1.4% at 71.88 EUR/MT
  • Rotterdam Coal JUN 25 down 3.5% at 93.75 USD/MT
  • The contract settled at its highest price since 17 April, when it was at PLN412/MWh.
  • Liquidity for the contract fell, with 10 lots done in 5 transactions from 13 lots in the previous session.
  • Average temperatures in Warsaw were mostly revised down on the day over 16 May – 27 June and are expected to be mostly below the seasonal average on the month-ahead forecast.
  • The 540MW Porkbka Zar hydro-pump storage plant will be fully offline over 2-12 June for planned works, with the 137MW unit 3 disconnected until 21 November.
  • Closer in, work at the 829MW unit 5 at the 3GW Opole coal plant is still expected to end on 18 May, with the 358MW unit 3 still planned to be reconnected by 20 May.
  • Works at the 444MW unit 11 at the 1.83GW Turow plant will still also end on 19 May.
  • The 781MW unit 14 at the 4.68GW Belchatow plant will also return from planned works on 18 May.
  • The day-ahead climbed to PLN398.68/MWh for Thursday delivery from PLN374.47/MWh for Wednesday as temperaures are expected at 8.2C on Thursday from 13.3C on Wednesday.
  • However, wind is expected at a 28% load factor tomorrow from 27% today -which likely capped gains.
