POWER: Poland’s April Rebounds on Temps, Unplanned Coal Plant Outage

Mar-06 14:54

Poland’s April has rebounded amid a downward revision of average temperatures in Warsaw, with an unplanned outage at the 910MW Jaworzno 2 coal plant today. However, oscillating price moves in European coal and declines in EU ETS limited gains.

  • Poland’s April baseload power settled at PLN417.50/MWh compared to its settled price of PLN415.65/MWh on 5 March, according to data on Polish power exchange TGE.
  • The contract rebounded to its highest since 3 March at PLN422.10/MWh
  • EUA DEC 25 down 2.6% at 66.98 EUR/MT
  • Rotterdam Coal APR 25 down 0.2% at 95.85 USD/MT
  • The April contract traded 32 times in 32 lots from 50 lots exchanged in the previous session.
  • The contract opened at PLN415/MWh before dropping to a daily low of PLN414.50/MWh and climbing to a daily high of PLN418.50/MWh. The contract ended the session at PLN417.50/MWh.
  • The 910MW Jaworzno 2 coal plant had an unplanned outage today, with the unit fully offline until 17 March.
  • The outage is due to an emergency repair.
  • Average temperatures in Warsaw were mostly revised down over 7-11 March and will begin cooling sharply from 11 March, dropping below the seasonal average over 13-16 March.
  • Closer in, the day-ahead continued to climb, reaching a weekly high of PLN463.07/MWh for Friday delivery from PLN348.06/MWh for Thursday as Polish wind is expected at a 9% load factor tomorrow from 44% today.
  • Looking slightly ahead, wind will then be at a 5% load factor on 8 March (Sat) – which could limit losses from lower weekend demand.

BONDS: Europe Pi: Long-Setting, Short Cover Across Futures In Past Week

Feb-04 14:40

Structural positioning is largely flat across European bond futures as of Monday's close, per MNI Europe Pi.

  • Each of the German contracts is in structurally flat positioning, as are Gilt; OAT are short, with BTPs long.
  • This is a subtle shift in the longer direction - Bobl and Buxl had been short as of our Jan 28 update, while OAT has shifted from "very short", and BTP has moved from "flat".
  • The week to Monday saw longs set across all contracts overall, with the exception of short cover in Schatz. Monday's trade was similar, with short cover in Schatz and Bobl, and longs set across the other contracts.
