"Petronas Looks at Exploration in Africa, South America, Canada" - BBG
Petronas exploring new opportunities, not a credit driver for now, with focus on preserving financial flexibility. Bonds trading at the tights.
Petronas is broadening its focus beyond Malaysia, with the CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik highlighting ongoing exploration and JV opportunities in Africa (notably Angola), South America, and Canada, with particular emphasis on LNG.
Diversification comes as lower expected oil prices drove moves to reduce the dividend payout to the Malaysian government and preserve financial flexibility. The state dividend for 2026 is set to fall 38% to RM20bn (from RM32bn in 2025), the lowest in nine years, viewed as a credit positive.
Petronas’s recent USD bond issues have performed well, with the 35's reaching the tights last week.

Aussie 3-yr futures are trading off recent lows. A resumption of gains from here would further narrow the gap with resistance at 96.730, the Sep 17 ‘24 high, leaving 96.860 as the next key level. Any continuation lower would instead strengthen a bearish threat. This would refocus attention on 95.760, the 14 Nov ‘24 low. Conversely, a reversal higher would open 96.860, the Apr 7 high.
