The European Commission said Tuesday it aims to end all remaining imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027.

In its REPowerEU roadmap, the EC noted that despite significant progress achieved under the REPowerEU Plan and through sanctions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU saw a rebound in Russian gas imports last year.  As part of the new plan, new contracts for Russian gas (pipeline and LNG) will be prevented, and existing spot contracts will be stopped by the end of 2025. The EC says that this this measure will cut one third of its remaining gas supplies from Russia by the end of 2025. The Commission will also propose to end all Russian gas imports by the end of 2027.

The EC said it would also take measures to clamp down on Russia's "shadow fleet" transporting its oil exports.
