The European Commission has abandoned its 2035 deadline for the full phaseout of sales of combustion engine.

Brussels said that the legislation would now require manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% by 2035 but also offset the remaining 10% by the use of green or low-carbon steel made in the EU.

Officials said that the change would allow hybrid vehicles and petrol cars to "still play a role beyond 2035".
