MNI BRIEF: China Overseas Debt Holds Steady-SAFE

China’s overseas and foreign currency debt has remained stable, with some improvement in maturity structure, State Administration of Foreign Exchange Deputy Administrator and spokesperson Li Bin said on Tuesday

As of the end of June, China’s outstanding external debt, including both yuan and foreign currencies, stood at USD2.44 trillion, down 0.6% from the end of March. Yuan-denominated external debt accounted for 52.1% of the total. Medium- and long-term external debt accounted for 42%, up 0.2 points from March 2025, while short-term external debt accounted for 58%.

Outstanding government external debt stood at USD421.4 billion, accounting for 17% of the total, the central bank’s external debt at USD91.1 billion, accounting for 4%, and the banking sector’s external debt  at USD1.0495 trillion, accounting for 43%.
