MNI BRIEF: China Mobile Data Traffic Increases in August

China’s average monthly per-account mobile internet traffic rose to 20.8GB in August, up 14.3% y/y and 1.17GB higher than at the end of 2024, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed Tuesday.

Total mobile phone subscriptions reached 1.8 billion by end-August, a net gain of 29.5 million from year-end 2024. Of these, 5G users climbed to 1.1 billion, an increase of 140 million this year, lifting 5G penetration to 63.4%.

Fixed broadband users totalled 689 million, up 18.8 million from the end of 2024. Within this, gigabit 1000 Mbps+ users increased to 233 million, a net addition of 26.6 million.
