PERU: Mining Minister Now Suggests Mining Halt Will Include Formal Operations

- Bloomberg reports on comments from Mining Minister Jorge Montero, who has apparently said that the mining halt that the government has announced in the Pataz province, where 13 miners were kidnapped and killed recently, will extend to include formal mines.
- This conflicts with comments he made earlier this week which suggested that the mining halt would only impact informal operations. The move has been made to allow the army to intervene in areas where criminal groups have triggered violence. Montero said that the 30-day halt could be extended.
- To recap, the violence has also put Prime Minister Adrianzen’s position at risk. Congress has advanced a motion to censure him this week after he called the miners kidnapping "non-existent", just days before they were found dead. As of now, however, Congress remains just short of the 66 votes it needs to approve the censure, according to a report in La Republica.
