TURKEY: Local Press Say Prosecutors Seeking 7 Year Sentence for Istanbul Mayor

Turkish prosecutors are seeking up to seven years in jail for Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu for on accusations of “targeting people who’ve fought against terror” as well as “insulting” and “threatening” state-run Anadolu Agency report citing an indictment. 

  • The accusations stem from Imamoglu’s speech at a panel where he made comments about Istanbul Chief Prosecutor Akin Gurlek.
  • Imamoglu is also currently under investigation for comments related to a legal expert in a separate case. He has previously denied the accusations.
