Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham treads a fine line on offering support to the gov't while also failing to deny ambitions to unseat Sir Keir Starmer as Labour leader and PM. Just days ahead of the Labour party conference, Burnham said "I can't ignore what's going on down there [in Westminster]".
- Labour figures have come out in defence of the PM, with Housing Secretary Steve Reed telling Times Radio that Burnham is taking “pot shots” at Starmer, and has made a commitment to serve his full term as mayor.
- The Sun quotes an unnamed gov't source saying, "Andy’s economic plan is to crash the economy and push up mortgage rates. It’s not serious and the Blairite Burnham from the 2000s knows it.”
- In an interview with the New Statesman, Burnham said on the gov'ts fiscal plans, “We’ve got to get beyond this thing of being in hock to the bond markets".
- In response, Labour MP Callum Anderson posted on X, “To lead a Labour government – and a Labour Treasury – you can’t just dismiss the bond markets. Every pound spent [...] depends on credibility with those who lend to the UK. Real change requires fiscal discipline, not wishful thinking.”
- Hypothetical polling with Burnham as Labour leader will raise further speculation, with a three per cent Labour deficit turning to a two per cent lead over the right-wing Reform UK with a change in leadership.
