PERU: Interim President Announces State of Emergency in Lima

- Peru's interim president declared on Tuesday that a state of emergency would be imposed in Lima and the neighbouring port of Callao in response to a wave of violent organised crime and extortions.
- The state of emergency will take effect at midnight on Wednesday and will last for 30 days in Metropolitan Lima and Callao," Jose Jeri said in a brief message broadcast by state television. Jeri said the measure authorises the deployment of the armed forces alongside the police to maintain public order.
- Separately, Peru’s fiscal watchdog is issuing its most stern warning yet that the country’s solid economic pillars are at serious risk from new legislative initiatives that carry an unmanageable cost. (BBG)
