Houston Ship Channel Closes Traffic Due to Fog: Moran Shipping

  • Bloomberg cites a report from Moran stating vessel pilots suspended all traffic at 8:54 AT CT Wednesday with a dense fog advisory in effect until noon.
  • HSC provides access to refienries including Pemex Deer Park, Valero Houston, LyondellBasell Houston, Chevron Pasadena and Exxon Baytown and crude-exporting terminals operated by Enterprise and Energy Transfer.
  • Galveston/Texas City ship channel has been closed since Tuesday morning, affecting access to Marathon Galveston Bay, Valero Texas City refineries and crude-exporting terminals run by Texas International Terminals.
  • Freeport Harbor Channel was closed at 2 AM CT Wednesday, impeding access to the Phillips 66 Sweeny refinery.

The Chicago Report™ also asked firms in December “Have you put any contingency plans in place in the event of a further port worker strikes?” Of the respondents that answered:

  • Almost half (48%) were looking to increase inventories of raw materials.
  • A third (33%) expressed plans to increase finished goods inventory.
  • Only 10% selected plans to increase production.
  • Again none planned to increase employment levels and 24% selected “Other”.
