FOREX: GBPAUD Selloff Extends, Narrows Gap to Horizontal Support

- As noted, weaker-than-expected growth data from the UK and ongoing fiscal concerns are weighing on sterling Friday, helping GBPAUD extend its notable pull lower this week. The cross has extended its selloff from the Monday close to 2.15%, with a hawkish surprise from the RBA providing additional downside momentum.
- Short-term technical factors appear to also be weighing, having broken a support trendline, drawn from the March 06 lows. Yesterday’s breach alongside a retest in early trade today has exacerbated the latest extension lower. Price has subsequently narrowed the gap to a cluster of daily lows located just below the 2.05 handle, which was notably the target for Westpac’s short recommendation this week.
- Further weakness would target a move to pivot support at the 2.0300 figure.
- Alongside Chancellor Reeves’ Mansion House speech next week, Australian employment figures and consumer inflation expectations are due Thursday.
