"Indonesia, Freeport Discuss Permit Extension Beyond 2041@ - BBG" - BBG
According to reports after market close Friday, the Indonesian government is in advanced talks to extend Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) mining permit beyond 2041, with underground mine investments requiring 10–15 years of development time. Neutral for spreads.
The key market catalyst is the government’s plan to increase its stake in PTFI by at least another 10% (from 51% currently) and whether Freeport McMoRan Inc. (FCX) will retain operational control. If FCX retains control, Fitch ratings should remain stable; if control shifts, a downgrade to BBB- is possible, aligning Fitch with Moody’s ratings.
Currently, Grasberg mine operations are suspended following a major mudflow incident on September 8 that trapped and killed workers, with rescue and recovery efforts ongoing.
