EMISSIONS: EUAs Secondary Market Traded Volume In May Fall 43% Y/Y On EEX

EEX reported that EUAs secondary market trading volume in May 2025 dropped 43% year-on-year, it said. 

  • A total of 25mn tonnes CO2e were traded, with futures contracts making up 96% of the volume, down from 44.5mn tonnes CO2e in May 2024.
  • Auctioned volume was at 41mn tonnes CO2e, 62% higher than the secondary market volume, indicating that allowances may be held or traded on other platforms.
  • The secondary market includes spot, futures and options.
