The EU-UK ETS linkage will benefit the UK’s iron, steel and electricity sectors the most, as they are most exposed to EU CBAM, according to UK trade statistics.
- EU CBAM charges would be the difference between EU ETS price and UK ETS price. Therefore, a linkage between both systems will have an impact to the UK companies’ carbon costs.
- From 1 January 2027, direct emissions and indirect emissions from imported steel, aluminium, cement, hydrogen and fertilizers will face costs under the EU CBAM – if domestic costs for emissions are below the UK’s ETS.
- Indirect emissions will face an additional £18/ton CO2e on top of the UK’s carbon price.
