Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro said Ecopetrol should import natural gas from Qatar to diversify suppliers and cut prices for consumers, Bloomberg reported.
- Petro said on X that “Colombia is being robbed”.
- Until now, Petro has mainly imported gas from the US and Trinidad.
- Petro has refused to sign new drilling licenses in a push to move Colombia away from hydrocarbons but instead forcing the country towards higher natgas imports.
- Colombian gas distributors announced increases up to 36% in prices in major cities.
- Any final decision on gas imports would have to be approved by Ecopetrol’s board.
