As noted earlier (see 'OIL: Oil Finds Support on Unlikely Oil Deal', 11:02BST and 'OIL: Oil Markets Await U.S./Iran Nuclear Talks', 08:35BST), CNN reports that Iran is increasingly doubtful towards the prospect of reaching a nuclear deal with the US. Indirect talks between Iran and the US resume for a fifth round at the top of the hour in Rome amid a downbeat atmosphere (at least judging by public pronouncements from senior Iranian figures).
- CNN reports that according to two Iranian sources, “The media statements and negotiating behavior of the United States has widely disappointed policy-making circles in Tehran. From the perspective of decision-makers in Tehran, when the US knows that accepting zero enrichment in Iran is impossible and yet insists on it, it is a sign that the US is fundamentally not seeking an agreement and is using the negotiations as a tool to intensify pressure.” The article states that initially Tehran believed the US was seeking a 'win-win' compromise, but now views the Trump administration as obstructive and uninterested in a deal.
- The sources add that while neither side "wants to leave the negotiating table, the position of the US is making the talks unproductive and formal meetings are unlikely to continue much longer."
- The prospect of an Israeli, US, or joint strike on Iran's nuclear sites would jump notably in the event of a formal cessation of talks. Indeed, the Israeli strikes on Iran's air defences in late-2024 have made the prospect of attacks on nuclear sites a more viable prospect for Israel or the US.
