IRAN: Axios-Trump 'Seriously Considering' Indirect Nuclear Talks

Axios reports that US President Donald Trump is considering taking up Iran's offer of indirect talks in an effort to reach a new nuclear agreement. The article claims that, according to two US military sources, Trump "is seriously considering an Iranian proposal for indirect nuclear talks, while at the same time significantly boosting U.S. forces in the Middle East in case President Trump opts for military strikes,".
- Earlier this year, Trump sent a letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei via officials from the UAE calling for direct talks between Washington, D.C., and Tehran in order to reach a new nuclear deal. Iran's response was to reject direct talks but say that indirect discussions may be possible to be conducted by the Sultanate of Oman.
- Indirect talks have made little-to-no progress since Trump withdrew the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2018. President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed, “We don’t avoid talks; it’s the breach of promises that has caused issues for us so far, [the US] must prove that they can build trust.”
- Trump has given a deadline of two months for a new deal to be reached - although it is unclear if that deadline is nearing or if the period will start once talks begin - and threatening significant retaliation if not. The US has been engaged in a significant military buildup in the region that would facilitate a major attack to take place almost immediately if that is the path Trump chooses.
