Austria has approved new rules forcing state-owned utilities to prioritise cheaper electricity for consumers by capping profit margins and mandating faster pass-through of wholesale savings, the government said, cited by Bloomberg.
- The mandate will be implemented within six months and will impact state-owned firms like Verbund, Energy Minister Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer.
- The Low-Cost Electricity Act also caps feed-in tariffs at €0.50/MWh, restricts solar and wind curtailments, and exempts most household PV systems from feed-in charges.
- Additionally, it enables subsidised power prices for around 280,000 participants and enables “peer-to-peer” power sharing in energy communities.
