Republic of Argentina (ARGENT; Caa3 pos /CCC /CCC+)
• An election this Sunday to decide the head of government for the City of Buenos Aires, one of the most important and financially strongest cities in the country, may be seen as a litmus test for the critical mid-term elections in October where President Milei’s political party La Libertad Avanza (LLA) hopes to gain seats in the legislature to support further economic and financial reforms.
• Propuesta Republicana (PRO) party has dominated the City of Buenos Aires leadership for about 20 years. Milei’s LLA party decided to run a candidate to oppose the PRO which has caused a divisive split and given the opposition a chance to win the election.
• The Peronist candidate Leandro Santoro has a small lead of 24.6%, followed by Milei’s candidate at 22.8% and then the PRO candidate at 19.7% according to media outlet La Nacion’s survey of regional pollsters. There are other splinter candidates from the PRO and LLA also drawing away votes from the main political parties.
• Whatever does happen, the LLA and PRO will have about five months to react to the outcome and unite against a common foe.
• The Province of Buenos Aires will have their election for governor in September and that is typically an opposition party stronghold but there are fractures on the Left as well which could create an opportunity. The mid-terms may ultimately be decided by who can unite the most effectively.
• ARGENT 2035s were last quoted USD68, unchanged today, 5 points higher QTD and up 1 point YTD.
