An open letter from American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) president, Everett Kelly, calling for an immediate end to the US government shutdown, has done little to influence prediction market assessments that the US government shutdown is likely to extend until at least mid-November.
- Everett, who represents over 800,000 federal government workers, wrote: "Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight. Today I’m making mine: it’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship."
- According to Kalshi, the government shutdown is likely to extend until 14 November. Polymarket sees November 22nd as the most likely end date.
- There is little chance of movement until President Donald Trump returns from his Asia trip at the end of the week, coinciding with November 1 - the key pressure point of the shutdown, when roughly 40 million Americans see SNAP benefits halted, troops miss their next paychecks, and open enrollment for 2026 insurance plans begins.
- Punchbowl News summarises: “The House hasn’t voted since Sept. 19 (that’s 38 days). The Senate is spinning its wheels on nominations and doomed-to-fail funding votes that aren’t moving the needle. Committee work has completely stopped in the House. The annual appropriations process is nowhere."
