TARIFFS: WH Econ Adviser-Confident In Success Of Appeal Against Tariff Ruling

May-29 12:23

Speaking to Fox Business, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett says that the administration is "confident" in the success of the appeal launched against the International Trade Court ruling that suspends a large swathe of President Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs. Says that the ruling "will not affect ongoing trade deals", and that he "still expects more trade deals in the coming weeks." Claims that "three trade deals are basically done". Commentary around the progress of trade deals would indicate that countries such as Japan, South Korea, India, and Switzerland are the most likely candidates to secure a swift agreement with the US, following on from the UK's deal earlier in May.

  • As part of the ruling, judges also ordered the White House to issue new orders reflecting the permanent injunction on tariffs announced or enacted since January that were based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), within the next 10 days. With the appeal launched almost immediately, it remains to be seen how long this process takes.
