COMMODITIES: Precious Metals Rally Ahead of US/Iran Talks

Feb-25 19:03
  • Precious metals have traded with a firmer tone on Wednesday, assisted by broader weakness in the US dollar and ongoing US-Iran tensions. Talks between the US and Iran are scheduled to resume in Geneva tomorrow.
  • Spot gold is currently up by 1.1% at $5,202/oz, while silver has risen by 4.2% to $90.8/oz.
  • The move in gold has taken it to a fresh short-term cycle high this week, marking a continued retracement of the Jan 29 - Feb 2 sell-off.
  • Initial resistance is at $5,249.6, the Feb 24 high, followed by $5,314.0, a Fibonacci retracement level.
  • Despite recent gains for silver, in contrast, a bear threat remains present. Price has traded below both the 20- and 50-day EMAs, signalling scope for a deeper retracement. Sights are on $61.136 next, a Fibonacci projection.
  • On the upside, initial firm resistance to watch is at $92.204, the Feb 4 high. A break of it would highlight a stronger short-term bull cycle.
  • Elsewhere, crude has unwound earlier gains after a larger than expected US crude inventory build in today’s EIA data release.
  • US crude inventories for the week to Feb 20 showed a large build of 15.99mbbl.
  • WTI Mar 26 is currently unchanged at $65.6/bbl.
  • A bull cycle in WTI futures remains intact, with sights on $68.11, the Jun 23 ‘25 high and the next key resistance. A pullback would be considered corrective for now, with support to watch at $61.90, the 50-day EMA.
