The Wall Street Journal reports that, according to a senior US official, there are more than 15 US warships in place to support the blockade on Iranian-linked ships: "The US has an aircraft carrier, multiple guided-missile destroyers, an amphibious assault ship and several other warships in the Middle East... These ships have the ability to launch helicopters that support boarding operations, and some are capable of marshalling commercial vessels to specific areas to hold them in place."
- WSJ, "The warships would likely operate outside the Strait of Hormuz to avoid threats fired by Iran... Navy Vice Adm. Kevin Donegan [said,] “There are lots of ways you can construct this, and there are a lot of boarding forces in the region now. Don’t expect it all to be started at once, this will build. Blockades take time to have an impact.”
- The prevailing view among analysts is that a successful blockade would have major consequences for Iran's economy. NYT noted earlier that one Washington think tank estimated it could cost the Iranian economy USD$13 billion a month.
- However, if Iranian ships attempt to run the blockade, the US Navy could be compelled to board or fire upon the ships, an escalation that would put US troops closer to a combat role. And, as China is a major buyer of Iranian oil, the geopolitical considerations are sensitive for the US. "What will happen if/when a US naval ship tries to stop an oil tanker heading to China? We might find out this week,” Politico noted.
