Speaking in his first press conference since winning the 28 April federal election, PM Mark Carney says that he "expects difficult but constructive talks" with US President Donald Trump. Carney confirms the earlier reports that he will visit the White House this coming Tuesday, 6 May. Carney: "As I have stressed repeatedly, our old relationship [with the US,] based on steadily increasing integration, is over. The questions now are how our nations will co-operate in the future and where we in Canada will move on."
- The PM says that he will not pursue a formal governing coalition with the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP). The NDP suffered its worst-ever election result, winning just seven seats. On 168 seats, Carney's centre-left Liberals sit four seats short of a majority.
- Carney confirms that his first cabinet will be sworn in the week of 12 May, with parliament to be recalled on 26 May. King Charles III will visit Canada to deliver the Speech from the Throne in person on 27 May. PM says “This historic honour matches the weight of our times,” It will be the first time the sovereign has delivered the speech in person since Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.
- Following the shock election result that saw the main opposition populist Conservative party leader, Pierre Poilievre, lose his riding of Carleton, there has been speculation that he could try to re-enter the House of Commons at a by-election. Carney says that if the Conservatives agree on a seat he will trigger a by-election "no games, nothing. Straight"
