JAPAN: Junior Coalition Partner Leader Confirms PM To Call Snap Election

Co-leader of the junior partner in the governing coalition, the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin), Hirofumi Yoshimura, says that PM Sanae Takaichi does intend to call a snap election at the start of the next Diet regular session. Yoshimura says that more details will be announced on Monday, 19 Jan, ahead of the beginning of the Diet session on 23 Jan. Yoshimura says the dissolution will come towards the start of the Diet session, but does not provide a date.
- Speculation about the prospect of a snap election has been rampant in recent days, but this marks the first time that a figure from the governing coalition has confirmed the rumours. As MNI noted on 13 Jan (see JAPAN: LDP Surge Could Put Gov't In Strong Position Post-Election), Takaichi's decision to call a snap vote looks to take advantage of strong approval ratings since taking over from Shigeru Ishiba in October 2025.
- Gains for Takaichi's conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) could give the party a majority in the House of Representatives. Nevertheless, it would still require the backing of Ishin in the upper chamber, the House of Councillors, where the LDP is also short of a majority.
- Asahi Shimbun reports on the potential dates of an election: "Nomination on the 27th, voting on February 8th" and "Nomination on February 3rd, voting on the 15th." Within the administration, there are strong voices in favor of "voting on February 8th," in order to minimize delays in the passage of the initial budget for the new fiscal year."
