UKRAINE: Anti-Graft Bodies Raid Offices, Apartments Of Zelensky's Chief Aide

Nov-28 08:27

Wires report that Ukrainian anti-graft bodies National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) are searching the office and apartments of Andriy Yermak, head of President Volodymyr Zelensky's Office and a key power broker in the governing administration.

  • The searches are believed to be part of Operation Midas targeting Ukraine's largest corruption scandal since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Earlier this month, Ukraine's independent anti-graft agencies brought charges against several people from President Zelensky's inner circle.
  • The case is another instance of a deepening rift between Ukraine's special services. NABU and SAPO detectives have found themselves in the crosshairs of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), accountable directly to the President's Office. Earlier this week, Ukrainska Pravda reported that Yermak ordered the SBU to move against SAPO head Oleksandr Klymenko.
  • President Zelensky has resisted calls to fire Yermak, who remains his most senior aide and Ukraine's chief peace talks negotiator, despite being engulfed by the escalating corruption scandal. Analysts have described him as Zelensky's key gatekeeper, who has gradually made himself indispensable and amassed extensive informal influence.
  • The ouster of the grey cardinal would represent a major development in the internal power struggle in war-torn Ukraine amid sensitive peace negotiations. The corruption scandal has weighed on the morale of the Ukrainian public and complicates talks with Western partners, whose domestic constituencies demand closer scrutiny of foreign aid.

It remains intact but a break would signal scope for a deeper retracement. Key resistance has been defined at $54.480, the Oct 17 high. Initial resistance is at $49.456, the Oct 23 high.
